Your Coincidence
2024 proposal

The artwork consists of two large signs alongside a trail, visible to cyclists and
hikers, but also visible from asdjacent areas. Each time a traveler approaches, both signs change, triggered by a motion detector. The first sign displays the number of the traveler that week – a number just for you. The second sign uses that number and displays a coincidental fact relating to the natural world that corresponds to it.

The piece personalizes human coexistence with nature. It speaks directly to you as
an individual. It puts you directly into relationship with the fact described, and
causes you to think about it and remember it as if it belongs to you by virtue of the
coincidence.

The facts speak about the natural world, mostly about the Greater Yellowstone Ecological
System but also moving out from there to the entire universe. They speak to our individual
place in the community, both local and vast.

When no one is passing them, the signs display silhouettes of the wildlife of the region
moving across the screens. This can be seen from the adjacent areas.
