Three Centuries
2015
Westmoreland Museum of American Art
Greensburg, PA
The goal was to "bridge the gap" between the museum on the hill and the City of Greensburg. There are two bridges that lead up the hill to the museum. The project places three viewing ports on the two bridges, literally bringing the museum down the hill. Two of the viewing ports look at anamorphic illusions that appear as one thing when seen through the viewing port and are completely different when viewed from the grounds of the museum (see renderings). The third viewing port has a monoscope embedded in the glass that is trained on a glass case in a window of the museum. The case contains collections owned by residents of Greensburg that are changed monthly.
The three parts refer to three centuries of American public art. The pedestal illusion refers to 19th century statues; the red abstract sculpture refers to 20th century modernist sculpture; the glass case filled with residents' objects refers to 21st century social engagement.
